Assalamu’alaykum warahmatulLAHi
wabarokaatuh,

Khas buat kehadrat sohabat sohabiah yang
saya hormati dan kasihi lilLAHI Ta’ala,
didoakan semoga berada dalam keadaan
Iman yang baik dan diberikan kekuatan
ber’amal liridholLAH!

AlhamdulilLAH, dengan izin ALLAH Ta’ala,
saya telah selamat menyempurnakan pengajian
5 ½ tahun saya dalam jurusan Bach.Education
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
(B.Ed TESOL) pada tanggal 4 Disember 2007
(Selasa) yang lepas. Moga segala-galanya
beroleh kesejahteraan dan diberkati
ILAHI ROBBI, insyaALLAH, amiin.

Sehubungan dengan itu, saya mengambil
keputusan untuk membuka lembaran baru
bagi “SyahidituSuci”.

Na’am, tiada dapat saya nafikan betapa banyak
kenangan telah terpatri sedari umur belasan tahun
di Malaysia hinggalah keberangkatan ke New Zealand
dan kini kembali ke tanah air saya siratkan bersama
penulisan dan hasil nukilan di laman

ini juga rerantaiannya. Sungguh ia punya erti
dalam hidup saya, syukran lilLAHi Ta’ala

Walaubagaimanapun sempena hadirnya 1 Zulhijjah

sebermula hari ini, saya akan mula mencoret pena

‘ala RasulilLAH Sholla ALLAHU ‘alaihi wassalam,

Assalamu’alaykum warahmatulLAHI Ta’ala
wabarokaatuh,

Especially for my dear Brothers and Sisters of ISLAM,

Ramadaan is an expansive and wide avenue for developing
one’s strength in all aspects;

*~ abstention from food... drink and passion during the day,
being patience on that, waking up in the night for prayers
and persevering over that throughout the month are some of
apparent means of strengthening one’s will.

*~ This is in fact a turning point which is an object of craving
for the people who have vision; those who humble themselves
for their Lord and seek the way of approach to Him.

*~It is a change towards a better way of life; a change
from the ignominy of sins to the glory of obedience;
from weakness and laziness to seriousness and
resoluteness; from bad customs and detestable
habits to pure and upright conducts.

*~ Fasting contains elements of strength, resoluteness
and strong will that are indispensable tools for one who wants
to attain high degrees and prosperity in this world and
the Hereafter.

ALLAH Subahanahu wa Ta’ala says,

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you
as it was prescribed for those before you, that you
may become pious.”

(Al-Baqarah 2:183).

Dear Brethren,

InsyaALLAH, the following will be an excerpt that I have
taken from a beautiful khutbah delivered by Abu
Uwais Abdullaah Ali and transcribed by: Umm Hasna
Firdous Bint Jabir, and insyaALLAH, it would be
a great pleasure for me to share it with all of you, my beloved
Muslims Brothers and Sisters.

~* Title: Benefits of Ramadhaan (We need Ramadhaan)
~* Lectured by :Abu Uwais Abdullaah Ali (Rahimahullaah)

TRANSCRIPTION:

Ramadhaan is a month of Forgiveness.

Ramadhaan is a month of Rahmah.

Ramadhaan is the month of generosity.

Ramadhaan, the month that Allaah subhaanahu wa
ta'ala accepts the Tawbah of the servants, and the month
that Allaah blesses His servants.

We are in need of Ramadhaan to correct ourselves,
for we have forgotten Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala for the
majority of the year.

To correct ourselves for we have been neglectful.

To correct ourselves for we are not upon the remembrance
of Allaah.

To correct ourselves because our hearts have gotten
hard, some hearts are dead, some hearts are sick, some hearts
are stone-cold, some hearts are black, getting no benefit
whatsoever. Some hearts are so bad, and so ill that they see
a good as a Munkar, (as an evil), and they see an evil as
a good. These are not as they should be.

We need a Ramadhaan.

We need a Ramadhaan because our connection with
Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala is not correct.

We need a Ramadhaan because we do not have any
Khushoo or devotion in our Salaah.

We need a Ramadhaan because our Quran has dust
and is sitting on a shelf.

We need a Ramadhaan because we never read the books
of Sunnah.

We need a Ramadhaan because we don't fast, and if we fast
physically without food or drink, we don't fast with our
eyes by lowering them and our tongue by not slandering
and our tongue by not lying and back-biting.

We need a Ramadhaan to get ourselves back in order, to work
for the Hereafter, to connect ourselves to Allaah tabarak
wa ta'ala.

We need a Ramadhaan because relationships brother
to brother and sister to sister is in a miserable condition.

We need a Ramadhaan because we have bad thoughts
about one another.

We need a Ramadhaan because of dhulm, injustice to
one another.

We need a Ramadhaan because there is backbiting,
there is envy, there is jealousy, and there is slander.

We need a Ramadhaan because we are despicable,
because we are sick, because we are ill. (All these are
diseases of the heart)

We need a Ramadhaan because we don't believe in
the promise of Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala, or if we do, we
do not implement it.

We need a Ramadhaan because it is time for us to
change and become something better then we are now.

We need a Ramadhaan because that is the only
thing that is going to get us together…

We need a Ramadhaan because we don't have unity,
there's no brotherhood

We need a Ramadhaan because there's no respect
for elders

We need a Ramadhaan because there's no real love
between us

We need a Ramadhaan, full of love and the Mercy
of Allaah
tabarak wa ta'ala.

A Ramadhaan like we come in, like in a clinic or
a hospital, trying to solve our illnesses, trying to
come out of there without the disease we came
with, trying to be better than we went in with.

We need a Ramadhaan. Look around you, look to
your right, look to your left, look in front of you and look
behind you and you'll say, "We need a Ramadhaan".

The sisters aren't covering properly, we need a Ramadhaan.
Brothers and sisters are mixing. We need a Ramadhaan.
Talking on phones and on the internet, we need a Ramadhaan.
This is a mess, we are in a fix, we are in a bind, and this is a problem…
We need a Ramadhaan. We need a Ramadhaan to get
ourselves together.

We need a Ramadhaan, that we come in the Masjid and we
face the Qiblah and we say "Allaahu Akbar" and we stand
in qiyaamah a long time until those diseases, that filth,
that sickness, that hardness the heart goes away.

We need a Ramadhaan that reminds us of the Hell-fire.

We need a Ramadhaan that tells us that we haven't been
given a certificate that we are people of Jannah.

We need a Ramadhaan that lets us known that we are
servants of Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala.

And if we were to spend our whole life, from the time we were
born until Yawm al Qiyaamah in Sajdaah, it would not
be enough to thank Allaah for His Mercy, His Grace
and His Blessings.

We need a Ramadhaan and it is clear. If there is any
fear of Allaah left in the hearts of ours and if there is any
hope of Jannaah left in us, and if there is any desire to
change and to be better and to be righteous and to
come to the level of Ihsaan, to come to the level of
a Mu'min, to have taqwa, to fear Allaah … We need
a Ramadhaan.

We need a Ramadhaan, a month of Tawbaah.

We need a Ramadhaan, a month of Maghfira.

We need a Ramadhaan to correct our behaviour,
to correct the differences & the difficulties and the envy
/ jealousies in our relationship between one another.

We need a Ramadhaan to understand that we have been
committing injustice to one another. And as the Prophet
(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said : 'Az-Zulm (injustice)
– "Zulumaat yawmal Qiyaamah" –we'll be changed
physically into darkness on the Day of Judgement.'

We need a Ramadhaan to understand the Hadith :
to fear the duaa of the one to whom we have done
injustice. For there is not between Allaah and the person
making the invocation, the person making that supplication
of the person to whom injustice has been done, there is no
veil between that person and Allaah. That duaa is
immediately accepted.

The oppressor is the one for whom things are not going right;
He is tripping into this and falling into that; He is Slipping
there and sliding here. Why I can't get ahead? Why I can't
progress in my Deen? Why I can't memorize this ayah?
Why I can't understand this hadeeth? We may be living
under the invocation, the answer for invocation for someone
whom we abused or stepped over. You know you need
a Ramadhaan. I know I need a Ramadhaan. We know
we need a Ramadhaan. We need to get ourselves together.
We've been running around in filth, we have been having our hearts
around the low matters; We need our hearts to be around
the thrones of Allaah; We need to think about the high
matters, high goals; We need to think about Jannah;
We need a hope for al-Jannah.

You're planning for marriage, you're planning for
education, you're planning for a job, but we need to
plan for the Jannah. We need to prepare for the Jannah
during the month of Ramadhaan.

"'Nahnu be haajathin Ma'aasa fir Ramadhaan."

We are in severe need for Ramadhaan, so that we come
into Ramadhaan with repentance, we come into it with
regret, we come into it realizing that we are weak, that we
need Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala to correct us, realizing
that we are wrong and that we need Allaah tabarak wa
ta'ala to place upon us that which is right, realizing that
we are weak and that we need Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala
to grant us strength. We need a Ramadhaan.

Oh Yes !! We need a Ramadhaan.

We needs nights of Qiyaam, we need dua and sujood,
we need nights of Ramadhaan to do thilawaah of Quran.
We need to listen to Husri, or Sudays or Shurain, or Hudhaifi.
We need a Ramadhaan to listen to the Quran. When
was the last time that we listened to the Quran?? When
was the last time we recited Quran? We need a Ramadhaan
to study Quran, to implement the Quran, and this
Ramadhaan may be our final Ramadhaan. As one brother
spoke, I believe it is Abu Thasleem Hafidahullaah, where is
the guarantee that this is not our final Ramadhaan?
What is the guarantee that it is not our final Ramadhaan?
We have to come into it seriously. And we want to come
out of it much better than we came into it. We want to come out
of Ramadhaan with Taqwa, because that was the
main reason that it was legislated.

"O you who believe fasting has been written upon you
as it was written for those before you, so that you may
gain Taqwa."

Taqwa is fear of Allaah. If we had taqwa, our condition
will be better than it is now. If we had taqwa our
relationships would be smoother, if we had taqwa …father
to son who is a Muslim, sister to brother who is Muslim, uncle,
aunt, niece and nephew who is Muslim, husband and wife who
are Muslims.. the relationships would be better if they
are based upon Taqwa. And we can achieve Taqwa during
the month of Ramadhaan. I don't believe that our hearts are
that hard, I don't believe that we can't change, I don't believe that
some of us who hold hatred for the last 10 years cannot learn to
love, and because we have been taught deceit and deception now
we can't learn to trust.

I don't believe that those brothers who have left circumstances
physically but have the teachings and the behaviours that they
had while they were up there, that they can't change. The sisters
who remove their bodies from the fitnah and physically remove
their bodies from a mistake, physically remove their bodies from
foolishness but their hearts have to follow. Be iznillaahi
tha'aalah ! Their hearts have to follow.

We need a Ramadhaan to inculcate these qualities. We
need to control our desires. We need to control our
tongue. We need to control our limbs. We need to
learn self-discipline. We need to control our anger.
We must do things in Ramadhaan not out of habit, something
that is just tradition., that we are more despicable when we
went in. We have to change our condition. We have to
change our connection with Allaah tabarak wa ta'ala.
For how light is the view of Allaah when they disobey
Him. This is what was said by one of the sahabas when he had
the crown of the Persian King in his hand.

We need a Ramadhaan so that we can focus on the
Aakhirah -- Hereafter and we give Naseehah and
advice to one another that is of benefit and that our
talking and our mixing is just not about the Dunya, and what
you want to do in the Dunya and how you are gonna be in this
Dunya.

We need a Ramadhaan so that people learn to
inculcate in their children to be like Abu Bakr
As-Siddeeq, Umar al-Khattab, Sa'ad abi Ibn
Waqqas and like this. We need a Ramadhaan so
that they can study knowledge. This Ummah needs
another Bin Baaz, this Ummah needs another
Al-Albani, this Ummah needs another Muqbil,
this Ummah needs another Ibn Taimiyyah, this
Ummah needs all of these and more.

You are gonna tell me that none of them can come
or no one like them can from our families? None
of them can come from us? Not everyone who comes
from us have to be Goofi. Can't our children speak
the Arabic language at a young age? Can't we put
in the hands of our children books that will benefit
the Ummah.. the same love the Kaafir have for Harry
Potter and their imaginary books? Our hope is low. Our
desire is low.

We are supposed to be having high goals.

We should be looking at our kids Abdullaah and Abdurrahman
and saying : You might be Sheikh Naasir for this Ummah. We
should be saying when listening to Sudaisi and Shuraim that
it could be you leading the salaah in haram. We are supposed
to be having high goals. But until we brush off the dust, the
foolishness of the jaahiliyyah , the hastiness of the youth, the
bad characteristics that we have, we have to get rid of them ,
we have to change our condition, we need aRamadhaan.

We need our Qiyaam at night, we need recitation
of Quran, we need to sit together and talk together
only about the deen, not about the Dunya, we need
to worry about our status in the Aakhirah, in
the Hereafter. We need to wake up from our sleep.

Wake up Oh Sleepy one. !!

Our slumber has been too long. You got to wake up, take
wudoo, get within the caravan of Mohamed Ibn
Abdullah, Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq, Umar al-Khattab,
Ibn Taimiyyah – you have to get with it. How long
are we going to stay sick? How long are we going to
be unsettled? How long are we going to have our
problems?

We need a Ramadhaan.

And let this Ramadhaan be the one where you come
out of it better, come out of it committed, come out of it
devoted, you come out of it with your head held high.

You are from the Ummah of the Prophet (sallallahu
alayhi wa sallam) and don't you forget it!!

Walhamdulillaahi rabbil aalameen.

to reason and choose the course of our actions. ALLAH Subahanahu wa Ta'ala, the EXALTED, did not force
us to be self-aware. Indeed he offered this blessings and
burden to the rest of creation first. There were no takers.

Selected Sayings about the QURAN.

1. Umar ibn al Khattab reported that the Messenger of ALLAH (p.b.u.h.) said,

“ALLAH will raise some people up with this book and bring down others”

(Muslim)

2. Abu Musa reported that the Messenger of ALLAH (p.b.u.h.) said,

“The example of the believer who reads the Quran is of a citrus fruit whose smell is nice and taste good. The example of the believer who does not read the Quran is that of a fresh date which has no scent but whose taste is still sweet. The example of the hypocrite who does not read the Quran is like a basil leaf which has not smell and whose taste is bitter. The example of the hypocrite who reads the Quran is that of a fragrant flower which has a nice smell but whose taste is terrible.”

(Agreed: i.e. this hadith is in all main collections.)

3. A’isyah r.a. reported that the Messenger of ALLAH (p.b.u.h.) said,

“A person who has expert knowledge of the Quran will be with the honorable writers (angels), and the one who reads the Quran and struggles with it in difficulty will get twice the reward.”

(Agreed)

Be very careful while giving your heart to someone (in marriage)..always remember your heart belongs to ALLAH and if you trust someone and give your heart to him, it means you are giving your heart to him as amanah.

Be very careful about choosing the correct person to take care of this amanah. If someone gives you his heart (in marriage), take care of his heart because a heart is an amanah and it certainly belongs to ALLAH S.W.T.

Never break a heart..it is a great sin indeed. If a heart gets broken, there is no melodious sound but strong gushes of wind and storm come around and surround the broken heart, consequently, rain of tears gradually run downs someone’s cheek…

PLEASE..be clever enough, never let others play with your heart ….

If,
Someone has broken your heart, do not seek revenge though you have an ikhtiar.

If,
Someone steals, breaks your things you could go to the court of justice and bring your evidences

BUT

If,
Someone breaks your heart, no worldly courts can punish the person because you have no evidence to present and people in this world are so blind, they can not see your broken heart

BUT

ALLAH S.W.T.
Know the matter of hearts..HE Knows what is in your heart and who has/had broken it

Complaining only to ALLAH

"I only complain of my distraction and anguish
to ALLAH "

Man needs to obtain his provision and other needs,
and to protect himself from harm.

In both cases, he should call on ALLAH should not
ask for provision from anyone other than ALLAH
and he should not complain to anyone other
than Allah.

In the Quran, ALLAH has mentioned goodly forsaking,
goodly forgiveness and goodly patience.

It was said that:

goodly forsaking is to forsake or boycott without
doing harm;

goodly forgiveness is to forgive without rebuking;

and goodly patience is to be patient without complaining
to any other person or created being.

When Ahmad ibn Hanbal was sick, he was told that *Tawus
used to hate the sound of a sick person's groaning, and would say,

"this is a complaint,"

so Ahmad never groaned until the day he died.

Complaining to the creator, on the other hand, does not
contradict the idea of goodly patience.

For Yaqub said:

"Patience is most fitting (for me)"
[Yusuf 12:83],

but he also said,

"I only complain of my distraction and anguish to Allah ..."

Umar ibn al-Khattab used to recite Surahs Yunus, Yusuf
and al-Nahl during Fajr prayer.

When he reached this ayah he wept so much that his
sobs could be heard in the last rows of the congregation.

Musa used to pray:

"O Allah, to You be all praise and to You (alone) do
I complain. You are the (only) One Whom I ask
for help, in You I seek refuge and upon You I rely.
There is no strength or power except you."

Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam), his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims!

That is the history of the outstanding women of ISLAM,
mothers of the faithful. Their virtues are glowing. They
had combination of beauties and virtues.

It is therefore, incumbent upon Muslim women to make
them their models in matters of their religion, their
submission to ALLAH and HIS Messenger (sallallaahu
'alayihi wa sallam), their conduct, their consciousness
of ALLAH, their performance of acts of worship, their
truthfulness in words and their spending for the poor.

They need to emulate them in their alleviation of
other people's sufferings; and in their efforts to
make their children righteous, correct them
with patience and in seeking fortification through
knowledge and learning from erudite scholars.

They need to emulate them in keeping themselves
properly covered, maintaining their chastity,
staying at their homes and keeping away from
doubtful and lustful things.

They should emulate them by avoiding pinning
their hopes on this world, heedlessness and
forgetfulness or being carried away by outward
beauties while the inward is corrupt.

The Muslim women should avoid looking at forbidden
things and engaging in amorous conversations with
alien men. They should beware of those who are calling to
the removal of hijaab and mixing with men.

Muslim woman's greatness and glory lie in her religion
and her hijaab.

ALLAH says,

" O Prophet Tell thy wives and daughters, and the
believing women, that they should cast their outer
garments over their persons (when abroad): that
is most convenient, that they should be known
(as such) and not molested.And ALLAH is Ever
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

(Al-Israa 33:59)

Dear Muslims!

The Prophet's wives lived with him humbly in apartments
built of brick and palm leaves, but full of eemaan and piety.
They showed patience with the Messenger of ALLAH
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) over poverty and hunger.

Sometimes, a month or two would pass with no cooking
fire kindled in their homes. They would spend days with
nothing to eat but only dates and water.

Sometimes they would make do with water only.

Yet they lived in contentedness and patience upon
ALLAH's promise that,

"The Hereafter is better for you than the present
(life of this world)."

(Ad-Duhaa 93:4)

And His promise,

"And whosoever of you is obedient to Allaah and
His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam)
and does righteous good deeds, We shall give her,
her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her
a noble provision."

(Al-Ahzaab 33:31)

Brethren in Islaam!

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) married five
of his wives with their ages ranging between forty
and sixty. By that he was able to lay an example in
taking care of the widow and their orphaned children.

He married Khadeejah while she was forty years old,
with three children from the previous marriage,
while he was unmarried before.

He married Zaynab bint Khuzaymah who was an almost
sixty-year-old widow.

He married Umm Salamah who was a widow with six children.

He married Sawdah who was a fifty-five years old widow.

He married some relatives from among his cousins.

And he married some women who were not his relatives.

He was a compassionate, dutiful and honourable husband
to them all. He lived with them in the most beautiful way.
He was always cheerful and kind to them.

Therefore, let those who want to prosper emulate the
Messenger of ALLAH (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam),
who is the best of all creatures.

Let the Muslim women follow the path of the righteous
wives of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam).

For, there is no success for any woman except by following
the path of these pious ladies in their righteousness and
God-consciousness and in their dutifulness to their husband
and children.

Wa' Jazâkum Allâhu Khairan

(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam), his household and companions.

Dear brethren!

Sawdah bint Zam'ah is another of the Prophet's
noble wives. She was pure-hearted and the
first woman he married after the death of
Khadeejah. She was his only wife for about
three years. She was gracious and noble,
and the purity of her heart manifested
when she gave her days with the Prophet
to 'Aaishah out of consideration for her husband's
feelings and in order to earn reward of her LORD.

Another great woman in the Prophet's household is
Hafsah, daughter of 'Umar. She was given to
observing prayers in the night and performing
supererogatory fasting. She grew up in a house
in which the cause of Islaam was supported and
truth was given prominence. Seven members
of her family participated in the battle of Badr.

'Aaishah said of her,

"She was my only competitor among the
Prophet's wives."

There is also Zaynab bint Khuzaymah al-Hilaaliyyah
who was very generous and hastened to perform
righteous deeds. She lived with ALLAH's Messenger
for only two months and then died.

Another distinguished woman in the house of Prophethood is
Umm Habeebah daughter of Aboo Sufyaan, the
emigrant and the one who was given to performing
meritorious deeds. She was the closest to the Prophet
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) of his wives in terms
of blood relation. There was no one among his wives
who was more generous than her as far as charity
giving is concerned. She migrated to Abyssinia, escaping
with her religion. The king of Abyssinia paid her bridal gift
on the Prophet's behalf and got her ready for him.

Another outstanding wife of the Prophet
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) was Umm Salamah,
the patient and noble woman. Her name is Hind
bint Abee Umayyah, one of the earliest emigrants.
When she wanted to migrate to al-Madeenah with her
husband Aboo Salamah, her clan separated between her
and her husband and son.

She said,

"Every morning I would go to Abtah [a valley in
Makkah] and I would keep weeping until evening.
I did so for a whole year or close to a year. They
later pitied me and gave my son back to me."

Her sure faith in ALLAH was firm-rooted.

When her first husband died, she said the
invocation that ALLAH's Messenger taught her,
so Allaah gave her a better husband in the person
of ALLAH's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam).

Umm Salamah narrated that the Messenger of ALLAH
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) said,

"If any Muslim who suffers some calamity says
what Allaah has commanded him," We belong to
ALLAH and to Him shall we return; O ALLAH,
reward me for my affliction and give me
something better than it in exchange for it,"

ALLAH will give him something better than it
in exchange."

When Abu Salamah died she said:

'Which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah whose
family was the first to emigrate to the Messenger
of ALLAH (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam)?'

I then said those words, and ALLAH gave me
the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam)
in exchange."

(Muslim)

Make this supplication your treasure during
afflictions, ALLAH will provide you with what
is better.

Dear brethren!

There is a woman among the Prophet's wives
known as Mother of the Poor. She is Zaynab
bint Jahsh whose mother is the Prophet's aunt.
She enjoyed nobility of birth and character.

She was described by Aboo Nu'aym as, 'devoted
and contented woman'. ALLAH married her to
His Prophet through an explicit verse from His Book,

"So when Zaid had accomplished his desire
from her (i.e. divorced her), We gave her to
you in marriage."

(Al-Ahzaab 33:37)

Her marriage to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam)
is a blessing to the Muslim women till the day of
Resurrection, for it was after her marriage that
ALLAH ordained hijaab for the women so that
it could serve as a symbol of protection for their
honour, chastity and purity.

Zaynab was extremely generous to the poor and
the weak. She was highly charitable. In spite of
her nobility and high status, she used to work with
her hands, tanning and making beads. And she
would spend the proceeds for the poor.

'Aaishah said,

"I have not seen a woman better in her
adherence to religion, more pious, kinder
to the kith and kin and more generous in
giving charity than Zaynab."

Juwayriyyah bint al-Haarith from the tribe of
Banoo al-Mustaliq is another of the Prophet's
distinguished wives. Her father was the
influential chief of his tribe. She was in herself
blessed as she was blessed to her tribe.

'Aaishah said,

"I have not seen a woman who is greater
in blessing to her people more than her."

She was given to performing much acts of worship
for her LORD. She sincerely and devotedly worshiped
her LORD. She would sit down in her prayer place
remembering her Lord after Fajr until mid-noon.

She said,

"The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam)
came to me one morning while I was glorifying Allaah.
He then went out for some of his needs. When he came
back just before mid-noon he said, 'Are you still there
remembering Allaah?' And I said, 'Yes.'"

(Muslim)

Another honourable wife of ALLAH's Messenger
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) is the beautiful Safiyyah
bint Huyayy, a descendant of Prophet Haaroon [Aaron].
She was a noble and intelligent woman. She was highly-placed, religious, deliberate and peace-loving.

The Messenger of ALLAH (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam)
told her,

"Indeed, you are a daughter of a Prophet [meaning Aaron],
your uncle is a Prophet [meaning Moses]; and you
are also married to a Prophet."

(At-Tirmidhee)

The feast of her marriage to the Prophet
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) comprised only of butter,
cottage cheese and dates. But the marriage was blessed.

Maymoonah bint al-Haarith al-Hilaaliyyah,
the woman who was given to being kind to the kith
and kin is another eminent wife of the Prophet
(sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam). She was one the
greatest women. ALLAH endowed her with pure
heart and performance of much acts of worship.

'Aaishah said about her,

"She was one of the most pious and most generous
to the kith and kin among us."

Verily, ALLAH S.W.T. knows BEST!

Fellow Muslims!
Fear Allah as He should be feared.
Fear of Allah is a reminder for His devoted servants and it is safety from
His punishment.

Dear brethren!
Muslim woman attains prosperity by following the path of the best
women who lived in the best generation and got nurtured in the house of Prophethood. They are women of high status and outstanding estimation. Allah praises them in the Qur'an where He says,

"O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allaah), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner."

(Al-Ahzaab 33:32)

They are blessed and great women.

Foremost among them is that intelligent and wise woman, Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, the religious and noble woman.

She grew up upon virtuous characters and manners. She was chaste and gracious. She was known among Makkah women as 'the pure woman'. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) married her and she became an excellent wife for him. She supported him with her life, wealth and wisdom. During his sorrowful days, he would seek shelter with her and confide in her.

When the first revelation came to him he went to his wife shaking, and he said,

"O Khadeejah, I fear for myself." But Khadeejah responded to his fear with a firm heart".

And she told him,

"By Allah, Allah will not disgrace you."

Islam started in her house and she was the first person to embrace it.

Ibn al-Atheer said, "Khadeejah was the first person to embrace Islam, according to the consensus of the Muslims. No man or woman ever embraced Islam before her."

At the beginning of the Prophet's mission, he was faced with many tribulations. But she stood by him compassionately and supported him with her outstanding intelligence. Whenever he heard any undesirable words from the people and came to her, she would strengthen and console him.

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) said about her,

"She believed in me when the people denied me, she trusted me when people belied me; she supported me with her wealth when people refused to support me and I was blessed with children by her when I was denied children by other women."

(Ahmad)

Khadeejah was a great and dutiful wife to her husband and an affectionate mother to her children. She gave birth to all the Prophet's children except Ibraaheem. She was extremely good-mannered. She never argued with her husband and she never bothered him.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) said,

"Angel Jibreel came to me and said: 'Give Khadeejah the good tidings that she will have a palace made of hollowed pearls in Paradise and there will be neither noise nor any trouble in it.'"

(Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

As-Suhaylee said,

"She was given the glad tiding of a house in Paradise because she never raised her voice over that of the Prophet and she never bothered him."

She was pleased with her Lord and Allah is pleased with her.

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) said,

"Paradise and there will be neither noise nor any trouble in it.'"

(Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Ibn al-Qayyim said,

"Khadeejah was the only woman known to have this honour."

Allah loved Khadeejah, so did His angels. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) also loved her so much. He said,

"I am blessed with her love."

(Muslim)

Whenever the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) remembered her, he would mention her in glowing attributes and would show gratitude for her companionship.

'Aaishah said,

"Whenever the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) remembered Khadeejah, he would never tired of praising her and invoking Allah's forgiveness for her. He appreciated her love and sincerity and he would honour her friends after her death."

'Aaishah said,

"He would often slaughter a goat, cut it into parts and distribute it to Khadeejah's friends. And whenever I asked him, 'Are there no other women in the world except Khadeejah?' He would say, 'She was this and that and she bore me children.'"

(Al-Bukhaaree)

After her death, Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) heard her sister's voice. He them became sad and said,

"She reminded me of Khadeejah."

Khadeejah was perfect in her religion, wisdom and conduct.

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) said,

"Many men attained perfection, but only three women attained it: Maryam, daughter of 'Imraan [Jesus' mother], Aasiyah, Pharaoh's wife and Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid."

(Ibn Mardooyah)

She preceded the women of this Ummah in righteousness, nobility and splendour.

Allah's Messenger said,

"Maryam [Mary, Jesus' mother] was the best woman of her time, and the best woman of this Ummah is Khadeejah."

(Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Khadeejah was righteous and made her home righteous. She reaped the fruit of her labour and she and her daughter became the best of the women of the worlds in Paradise.

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayihi wa sallam) said,

"The best from the women of Paradise are: Khadeejah, Faatimah, Maryam [Mary] and 'Aasiyah."

(Ahmad and An-Nasaa'ee)

She occupied a great place in the Prophet's heart. He did not marry any woman before her neither did he marry any woman or have any concubine while she was still with him until she died. He was extremely distressed with her death.

Adh-Dhahabee said,

"Khadeejah was intelligent, gracious, religious, chaste and noble. She is one of the dwellers of Paradise."

Looking up at the sky
Searching for world most high
He rejected the way of
Worshipping gods of clay
Prophet Ibrahim knew that Allah was near
And that the heart of a Muslim is sincere.

Under the hot burning sun
He declared God is One
Though with stones on his chest
His iman would not rest
The more one thing knew that right would conquer all
And the heart of a Muslim must be strong.

It’s the heart of a Muslim
Through the guidance of Islam
It makes you fair and kind and helpful
To your fellow man
So living as a Muslim means
That you must play a part
Allah looks not at how you look
But what is in your heart.

In a poor meek estate
Little food on our plate
Mother said she was glad
Always sharing what we had
When I asked how can we share what’s not enough
She said the heart of a Muslim is filled with love.
It’s the heart of a Muslim
Through the guidance of Islam
It makes you fair and kind and helpful
To your fellow man

He said it’s time you should know
You will learn as you grow
That some people around
Will do what’s there to bring you down
Father said to be a star that’s shining bright
For the heart of a Muslim does what’s right.

So whatever you do
Make sure your words are true
Honesty is the best
Because life is a test
Even if it hurts so much you want to cry
For the heart of a Muslim does not lie

Question:

What are the means and ways of achieving unity?

Answer:

The means of achieving unity are:

First:

Correcting one’s Creed, such that it becomes purified
from Shirk.

Allah says:

“Verily this nation of yours is one (unified) nation,
and I am your Lord, so be dutiful to Me.”

[Surah Al-Mu’minoon: 52]

This is since it is only the correct creed that will
unite the hearts and vanquish the malice, as opposed
to their being various beliefs and several deities,
for each adherent of a creed will incline towards his
own creed and deity, whilst holding that which others
are upon to be falsehood.

This is why Allah says:

“Are many different lords (i.e. gods) better or Allah,
the One, the Irresistible.”

[Surah Yoosuf: 39]

This is why in the Days of Ignorance, the Arabs were
divided and suppressed in the earth. But when they entered
into Islam and their creed (beliefs) became rectified,
they united their ranks and unified their rule.

Second:

Hearing and Obeying the Muslim Rulers,
which is why the Prophet said:

“I counsel you to have Taqwaa (fear/obedience)
of Allah, and to hear and obey (the rulers) even if an
Abyssinian slave assumes leadership over you.
For indeed, whoever lives (long) among you will see
great differing… ”

The reason for this is because disobeying the Muslim ruler
results in differing.

Third:

Returning back to the Book and the Sunnah
to quell disputes and end differing.

Allah says:

“So if you differ in some matter, then return it back
to Allah and His Messenger, if you truly believe in
Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more suitable
for final determination.”

[Surah An-Nisaa: 59]

So one should not turn back to the opinions and traditions
of men.

Fourth:

Rectifying and reconciling, when disputes occur,
between individuals or between nations.

Allah says:

“So fear Allaah and rectify all matters of
dispute amongst you.”

[Surah Al-Anfaal: 1]

Fifth:

Fighting the transgressors and Khawaarij who
seek to split the Muslim’s unity. If they are strong
and powerful, they will demolish the Muslim society
and corrupt the Ummah.

Allah says:

“But if one of them transgresses against the
other, then fight against the one that transgresses.”

[Surah Al-Hujuraat: 9]

This is why the Commander of the Believers,
‘Alee bin Abee Taalib, may Allah be pleased with him,
fought against the transgressors and the Khawaarij.
And this was considered one of the greatest of his virtues.

Points of Benefit From al-Fawaa`id of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

ONE:

How can anyone who has common sense trade Paradise and what is in it for the pleasure of one hour?

TWO:

When you fear the creation, you feel repelled by it and run away from it, but when you fear the Creator, you feel close to Him and run towards Him.

THREE:

If knowledge without action were of benefit, why did Allah condemn the scholars of the People of the Book? and if action without sincerity were of benefit, why did He condemn the hypocrites?

FOUR:

Repel the thought, for if you don't, it becomes an idea. So repel the idea, for if you don't it will become a desire. So fight against that (desire), for if you don't, it will become a determination and a passion And if you don't repel that, it will become an action. And if you don't replace it with its opposite, it will become a constant habit. So at that point, it will be difficult for you to change it.

FIVE:

When a decreed matter occurs to Allah's a'bd (slave), which he dislikes, then he should have six perspectives about it-->

->First: The Perspective of Tawheed:

And that Allah is the One who decreed it and willed it and created it. And whatever Allaah wills comes to pass, and whatever He doesn't will doesn't come to pass

->Second: The Perspective of Fairness:

And that He ruled this event to occur in the past and that there is fairness in His Divine ordainment.

->Third: The Perspective of Mercy:

And that the person's mercy with regard to this thing that was decreed supercedes his anger and vengeance

->Fourth: The Perspective of Wisdom:

And that it was Allah's infinite Wisdom that brought that about. He did not decree it in vain nor did He divinely execute it for no purpose

->Fifth: The Perspective of Praise:

And that to Allaah belongs the complete and entire praise for that thing that was decreed from every angle of it.

->Sixth: The Perspective of Worship to Allaah ('Ubudiyyah):

And that he is a pure worshipper of Allah from every standpoint. His Master's Rulings and Decrees occur to him by virtue of his being Allah's possession and slave. So Allah administers him under His decreed rulings just as He administers him under His religious rulings. So it (i.e. the decreed event) becomes a place for these rulings to occur to him.

SIX:

Little success (from Allah), bad views, unawareness of the truth, corruption of the heart, laziness in making dhikr, wasting time, distaste for the creation, estrangement between the servant and his Lord, the prevention of the supplication from being answered, hardening of the heart, the termination of blessing from ones provision and lifespan, the prevention of knowledge, being covered in debasement, humiliation at the hands of the enemy, constricting of the chest, prolonged grief and sorrow, a wretched life of poverty, and a gloomy state of being are all produced from sins and neglecting to remember Allaah just as crops are produced from water and burning from fire. And the opposites of these things are produced from obedience to Allaah.

SEVEN:

If your mind would free itself from the governorship of your desires, the state would return back to it.

EIGHT:

You have entered into the abode of desires, so you have put your life at stake.

NINE:

It was once to said to one devout worshipper of Allah: "Until when will you continue to exhaust your soul?" So he responded: "It is its relaxation that I seek."

TEN:

The women of this world were made beautiful to those who can see in order to test which of them prefers them over the women of the Hereafter. So whoever knows the extent of differences, he will choose what deserves to be chosen.

Syahiditusuci: ALLAH S.W.T. is The Only Guide. The TRUTH.

Bismillah...

Occasionally a person faces various physical and spiritual sorrows and troubles in the world. Amongst these are feelings so intense that they cannot be compared with any other physical pain. This feeling that causes such great distress in the human soul is a feeling called "regret."

There are two completely different forms of regret, however. The regret felt by people of faith and the regret that non-believers experience. These two feelings are extremely different from one another.

Believers are the people who have an absolute faith in the fact that events take place by Allah's Will, and whatever befalls them does so by Allah's Will. This explains their all-important distinctive attribute of putting their unyielding trust in Allah, at good times, in trouble or when they make a mistake. The Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) pointed out the strong character of the believer with a comparison in the hadith below:

"The similitude of a believer is that of a standing crop in a field which is shaken by wind and then it comes to its original position but it stands at its roots." [Muslim]

Upon making a mistake,
a believer immediately repents with sincerity and hopes for Allah's forgiveness. As a result, he does not suffer from a distressful and long-lived feeling of regret. The regret felt by believers urges them to ask for repentance, to purify themselves and prevents them from repeating this error. It helps them rectify their errors and prevents them from plunging into a distressful and pessimistic mood. Moreover, this regret does not reduce their enthusiasm, devotion, or religious zeal nor does it drag them downward into a spiral of apprehension and depression.

Regret felt by disbelievers, on the other hand, is very distressing and long-lasting, as they do not put their trust in Allah when they encounter a difficulty or commit a transgression. Throughout their lives, they often use phrases like "I wish I had not done this..." "I wish I had never said this...," and so on.

More importantly,
they are subject to a much greater regret in the Hereafter. Those who lived a life apart from the religion (deen) in this world will regret every misguided moment of their lives. They were warned before and invited to the straight path. They had enough time to contemplate and embrace the right way. Yet they did not listen when they were warned, ignoring the Hereafter as if they would never die. Then in the Hereafter, they will have no chance to get back to this world and correct their errors.

In the Qur'an, Allah relates their regretful expressions as follows:

We have warned you of an imminent punishment on the Day when a man will see what he has done, and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, if only I were dust!" [Surah an-Naba': 40]

"If only you could see when they are standing before the Fire and saying, "Oh! If only we could be sent back again, we would not deny the Signs of our Lord and we would be among the believers." [Surah al-An'am: 27]

They will say,

"If only we had really listened and used our intellect, we would not have been Companions of the Blaze." [Surah al-Mulk: 10]

I wish to warn people against a day when they will regret saying "had we only understood...," "had we only not rejected the signs of our Lord...," "had we only followed those who brought us the message...," "had we only done this and that" etc and to invite them to live for Allah while they still have the chance to correct their wrongs.

Keep in mind that that day no one's regret will save him from Allah's wrath. The only way to avoid this regret is to submit to Allah while there is still time and to comply with the commands of Allah.

"Respond to your Lord before a Day comes from Allah which cannot be turned back. On that Day you will have no hiding-place and no means of denial." [Surah ash-Shura: 47]

Allah (swt) gave us endlessly favours and blessings that we can't even count. Thanks to them we live happily; without them we would have perished instantly. And even if we spend all our lives for praising Allah just for one single blessing, we wouldn't be able to thank Allah properly.

Our health is one of the important favours and one of the greatest blessings of Allah on us. This body of ours is a great and superb creature. There are many organs inside and outside of our body - billions of cells and tissues, extremely well-ordered systems and mechanisms, continuous and orderly functions and progresses, biological phenomena and activities that repeat themselves continually in perfect order, our mysterious and marvelous brain, tireless heart, fine nervous system, circulatory systems, physics laboratory lungs, chemical factory liver, kidneys that contain millions of filters, bone structure that is an engineering marvel, layers of assorted muscles that cover all these, skin, eyes to see, ears to hear, nose to smell, sweet speaking tongue, organs to produce new generations, endless mind, limitless and countless senses, wonderful system of reflection, discovery, inventions, arts....

How come all these go like clockwork and their harmony doesn't become depraved, nothing goes wrong; and how come we stay healthy for many years without having a breakdown? How come an extensiveness, vastness, deepness, abundance, intricacy, complexity, interdependence, partnerships and togetherness of this magnitude lasts for life in a perfect manner? Because of these difficult conditions, misfortune, breakdowns, and sickness should be ordinary happenings and expected to happen any moment. But it's not so!

Health is a very amazing state, an extraordinary miracle! We personally have nothing at all; there is absolutely someone who is guarding and taking care of us. Every single moment we exist and live with the help of the Almighty and Absolutely-Wise Allah - every single moment we are repaired and re-created, until such time as He wishes....

But there is also death beside life, and sickness beside health. There IS! Because it is necessary and full of wisdom! Sickness is the messenger of death, and the reminder and denouncer of the Hereafter! What would have happened to the world if death never existed? Death is a discharge, a salvation; a new and different birth; the end of the longing and meeting again the Beloved....

Health is a blessing, sickness is an examination. It is necessary to praise Allah for the blessings, and to show endurance during examinations.

Many people don't know but sickness is a blessing according to Islam for the faithful servant, for a patient and well-behaved Muslim who doesn't flare up or rebel, and for those adept and graceful servants who know that sickness comes from Allah, and who don't oppose the destiny or complain.

There are many rewards and recompenses for the sick, their sufferings are compensated with spiritual honour and gifts. Our Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (s.a.w.) said:

The sick person's sleep is considered as worship and his moaning as litany of praise to Allah. He is rewarded as though he is performing his usual prayers when he was healthy although he is unable to do so now. His supplications are accepted, his sins are forgiven, all his mistakes and wrong-doings recorded in his book are deleted, and he is told `Very well, start your new life with an absolutely clean book!'

Sickness wakes people up from heedlessness, guides them to give up their sins, makes them think about the Hereafter, leads them to pious foundations; makes them more thankful to Allah, and teaches them the necessity of taking better care of their health and making better use of their life - something they didn't realize before, teaches them to understand other sick and pained people better, to feel sorry for them and to help them; and rises their ranks and degrees higher in the Hereafter.

I wish you all good health, truth, happiness, and peace in religion, in this world and the Hereafter; quick recovery for my sick and pained brethren from Almighty Allah, and wish them to have brave endurance and bountiful rewards.

May Allah bless my loyal, faithful, compassionate, self-sacrificing brethren in the medical profession who dedicated their lives to the ideal of seeking remedy for the pain of those in suffering, and give them high material and spiritual ranks and degrees, great earthly and spiritual rewards, and increase their numbers, and make them victorious and superior over the non-believers and the unjust

~~ Stealing in the Masjid ~~

Once upon a time when my father was in his teens, his father took him to the masjid [mosque] to pray. My grandfather, it seems, had a habit of keeping his loose change in his shirt pocket. As they prayed side by side, during one of the prostrations, the coins fell down onto the carpet.

Apparently deep in concentration, my grandfather did not notice it. However a gentleman seated nearby as well as my father noticed the incident. The man reacted fast and scooped the coins and went off into another corner of the masjid.

My father took everything in and as soon as my grandfather finished praying, he started to narrate what transpired. My grandfather having heard just about what transpired stopped my Dad from telling him who took the money.

He then proceeded to tell my Dad the following. If the Man has resorted to stealing in the masjid, then it must be because his circumstances are bad. We must not be quick to judge such people, he said.

Since they owned a grocery shop, my father was told by his father to ensure that every month he should make up a parcel of all the bare necessities required in a household and send it to that person without telling him who it was being sent to.

Wouldn't this world be a better place to live in if we had such wisdom permeating within our societies!

A note To PONDER Upon

In the name of ALLAH, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu’alaikum w.b.t ( peace be upon you).

Dear beloved and respected Brothers and Sisters of ISLAM (BASIS),

When some things are beyond our control, here’s something that you must NOT DO so as to be happy:

You MUST NOT decide how you think the world SHOULD be. You MUST make rules for how everyone SHOULD behave. Many times, such thoughts can bring you spiralling down into more unhappiness.

On the other hand, let’s say you EXPECT that:

Friends SHOULD return favours.
People SHOULD appreciate you.
Planes SHOULD arrive on time.
Everyone SHOULD be honest,
Your beloved ones or best friends SHOULD remember you in their do’a (prayers).

These expectations may sound REASONABLE.
But, often, these things WON’T happen!
So, you end up FRUSTRATED and DISSAPPOINTED.

There’s a better way strategy. Demand less, and instead, have preferences! For things that are beyond your control, tell yourself:

“I WOULD PREFER “A”, BUT IF “B” HAPPENS, IT’S OK TOO!”

You prefer that people are polite…but when they are rude, it doesn’t ruin your day.
You prefer sunshine…but if it rains, it is ok too!

To become HAPPIER, we either need to:
a) CHANGE the world, or
b) CHANGE our thinking.

* It is EASIER to change our THINKING!
* It is not the problem that is the issue, but rather it is your ATTITUDE attending to the problem that is the PROBLEM.
* It is not what happens to you that determine your happiness but rather HOW YOU THINK about what happens to you!

Journal Entry – B.Ed TESOL No.2

Date : April 2005

First and foremost, I would like to thank God for giving me strength to go through two months of living in Auckland. Thanks for such a wonderful gift , My Lord.

Driving past, walking fast.
To the field of dreams, hear the children screams
Every corner represents, a different image in my mind
A momentary emotion, spacebanked in time,
In time

Time flies..and I have experienced lots of new interesting things. Followed will be descriptions of 5 aspects of life that I encountered through 60 days of living in Auckland. The aspects are categorized as linguistic, academic, social, cultural, and affective.

1. Linguistic

While completing my first EDUC 225 assignment, I came across a word that causes a concussion among my course mates (Malaysian) that is “SPATULA”. Back at home, such term become applicable when it comes to Science subject. We make full use of spatula in most of our Science projects and experiments in school laboratories. Besides, it is also recognized as a small instrument with a flat surface, used by doctors to hold our tongue down so that they can examine our throat. In contrast, in a Western culture, interestingly, the item is well-known as a part of the cooking utensils. In term of shape, ‘spatula’ that we use is more like a flat steel spoon, in contrast in American culture “spatula” looks like a ladle. On the other hand, among the English, it is regarded as a kitchen tool with a wide flat blade used for spreading, mixing, or lifting soft substances. What a great difference..a small thing could make…in different cultures…but in one planet ..named Earth.

2. Academic

Thanks God! I manage to finish and hand in all assignments (EDUC 223, EDUC 225 & ESOL 201A) before study break begins which is going to start on 18th April 2005. In general, doing those assignments really opened my eyes and mind that to live is to have problems (I did faced difficulties in completing those tasks) and to solve problem is to grow intellectually (not by crying, not by complaining, not by sighing, but by thinking constructively...deep learning..not just surface learning). And the most important of all, I always bear in mind that teachers only open the door but I must enter it by myself. DEPENDENT LEARNERS!

3. Social , Cultural, and Effective.

On 27th February, my friends and I went to a friendly hockey match between Malaysia and New Zealand. It was a superb match. Both teams battled hard against each other from A to Z. Everybody paid full focus to the match without missing any single seconds of it. Unfortunately, Malaysia lost the game to New Zealand 0-3. But we still won the cheers. We were the loudest group on that day. An interesting thing that captured my mind on that day was, Malaysian prohected their voice as loud as possible when it came to singing our national anthem. In contrast, New Zealanders who attended the match on that day remained silence, we hardly heard any single words uttered from their mouth when their national anthem was aired. And I still wonder WHY?Next, for Easter, we went to David and Cynthia’s house at Glendowie to learn on how to bake English scones and lemonade juices. The Irish couple and their two little daughters welcomed us with broad smiles and gratitude. Cynthia brought us around the house and showed us their apple, grapefruit and lemon trees. She offered us some fruits to be taken back to Railway Campus. I met Pauline, a grandmother of a girl and a boy at the occasion. She was so motherly and I liked her so much. She narrated to me the story behind Easter celebration and described on how people celebrated it in New Zealand.

Then when it came to baking scones and making lemonade, we were the most excited ones at the kitchen. Cynthia guided us on it step by step and I managed to record it via my digital video-camera from beginning till end. After about half an hour, tantalizing smells of fully baked golden scones filled the atmosphere and watered everyone’s mouth. Pauline spread some jam and cream on the scones for me with a sweet smile. It really touched my heart. I could not adequately express my feeling to Pauline at that moment. Tears filled my eyes. Seeing me crying, she approached me closer and consoled me. Her affection reminded me of my mom. Oh, how I wished she was there! I really most those precious moments; when we baked cookies and cakes, whenever the whole family got together at home. Mom, I miss u so much!

People need people and friends need friends
And we all need love for a full life depends
Not on vast riches or great acclaim
Not on success or on worldly fame
But just knowing that someone cares
And hold us close in their thoughts and prayers

Journal Entry – B.Ed TESOL no.1

I would like to begin my journal entry with something that I used to hear from my beloved mother, Faridah:

“The journey of a thousand miles has to start with the first step”.

And this is the first part of my journey of pursuing new knowledge in Auckland, the City of Sails. Thanks to Lord The Almighty, by His Grace and Mercy, I managed to go through a month of living in an alien place without my family successfully and I must say that I enjoyed every part and parcel of it.

Followed are descriptions of 5 aspects of life that I encountered through 30 days of living in Auckland. The aspects are categorized as linguistic, academic, social, cultural, and affective.

First of all is the linguistic aspect, in other words, language. As a new comer, I did faced some difficulties in understanding words uttered by New Zealanders for the first few weeks. The way they pronounced certain words was quite different from the Queen’s English, the one that I learned in my hometown. From my observation, I discovered that many of them tend to speak without opening their mouth widely. It looked as if they were mumbling those words inside their mouth. Hence, in order to understand messages they tried to convey to me, I had to pay full concentration not only to their facial expressions but also their lips’ movements. This technique was also applied in understanding first few lectures and tutorials in campus.

The second aspect is academic. For this semester, I have to cover three courses which are Advanced Academic Writing (ESOL 201A), Educational Psychology (EDUC 223) and Curriculum Assessment and Evaluation (EDUC 225). Out of the three courses, I noticed that ESOL 201A is more relaxing . It is a course where everybody let their hair down and had some fun. The lecturers involved not only expert in the language field but also in the classroom management. They managed to control their class successfully with their motherly way of delivering knowledge to their learners, consequently, made everybody enjoyed the course very much. Next, the EDUC 223; in terms of content, it is more like a continuation episode of “Human Development” and “Learning and The Learner”, both courses that I studied while completing my first year of degree in Malaysia. Thanks God! My latent knowledge of the subject helped a lot in enabling myself to understand it. Last but no least is the EDUC 225, the toughest course among the previous three courses. It is a hard core course, packed with loads of must-have information. The lectures and tutors of this course wore serious faces almost all of the time. I could feel the tense was up on the air as everybody busily tried their best not to miss any single words uttered by the respective lecturer. The language used in this course really challenged oneself to heighten their linguistic ceiling.

The third aspect is social. I realized that guys and girl are freely talking and poking each other here. In contrast, back in Malaysia, I am bound to certain norms of society. As a girl or a lady, I must well-behaved myself; being polite and genteel. I must restrict myself from being over socialized with people of the opposite sex. I can set conversation with guys but just towards a certain extent; no touches such as patting and poking should take place. Speaking about socialization; in term of making new friends with society, thanks to Lord of all The Worlds, I managed to tie new bonds of friendship with other international students at University of Auckland and also at my residential area, The Railway Campus. Majority of them are Americans and Asians. They were all out-going people or in other words they are the extroverts. I love to befriend them.

Fourth, is the cultural aspect. Interestingly, I came across a new culture of New Zealand’s residents; they keen to hold morning tea sessions to their guest or new comers. During such session, it was obviously seen that there were smiles on everybody’s faces and some of them also had dimples dancing on their cheeks. This warm sensation helped me a lot in filling the emptiness of love in my heart. Only God knows how much I longed for my beloved ones in my hometown. Next, when it came to climate, it was a bit strange for me as a newcomer to this City of Sails; though the sun shined blazingly in the sky, but the blowing wind of Auckland, silently blanketed myself with coldness. In other words it managed to make me felt chilled. Only than I knew that, this country had dried but cold air circling around the place. Besides, I discovered that Auckland’s sun ray was a dangerous one. Espousing oneself outdoor without perfect moisturizer and sunscreen protection may risk her to suffer sunburns, bad rashes, and the worst of all , skin cancer. Hence, just a few days after arrival, I darted into University Of Auckland’s pharmacy to get a sunblock with an assured SPF-grade for better skin protection.

Finally, the last aspect of the five is affective. Truly, just after I reached Auckland International Airport, I broke into tears. I still could not believe my eyes that after twelve hours of journey via Malaysia Airline; I arrived safely at a new destination of learning where another chapter is going to be tinted in my diary of life. I spotted people smiled broadly and waved excitedly to their loved ones and also foreigners. Indirectly, such spirit of friendliness of the New Zealanders warmed the hearts of those who saw it. I got homesick on the 21st of February, the fourth day of my arrival in Auckland. The number

21 meant a lot to me this year as I turned up 21 on that day itself. The moment that I had been waiting for such a long time, significant pairs; being 21 on the 21st of February. Celebrating it alone in an alien place was something that I would not forget for the rest of my life. Tears kept running through my cheeks as I recalled it back. I prayed to God, the Supporter of the one who need support, to showers me with chains of strength and patience. May He bless my humble effort of seeking new knowledge in a new land named New Zealand today and the days to come.

Hello, good morning, Miss SSY and how are you today?

SSY:
Hello, good morning, Ms.?. Alhamdulillah (thanks God), I’m totally in a great health condition and I hope the same goes to you too.

Interviewer:
InsyaAllah (by God’s permission), thank you. First of all, I would like to thanks you for giving me permission to interview you ..plus recording this session this morning.

SSY:
You’re welcome. My pleasure and I’m more than happy with it, lillah (sincerely).

Interviewer:
Thanks again. Oh, yah, SSY, it is important for me to let you know that the chief reason for this interview is to help me to complete my Educational Psychology assignment on “how people think about their performances while studying” ; in other words making analysis of the attributions a person makes for their success and failure in study. And your real name will not be identified in my report; you’ll remain anonymous.

SSY:
Yes (nodding indicate agreement and understand).

Interviewer:
Before we move further, would you mind to introduce or describe a little bit about yourself..perhaps about your age, what course are you taking,.. and etc.

SSY:
Sure. I’m S..S..Y. I’m now doing my second year of degree in B.ED TESOL course. I’m the eldest of five siblings..and I’m like the chip of the old block since both of my parents are educators..the same postI am going to be in a few years time. I am 21 years old.

Interviewer:
Hmm..the eldest..a great responsibility must be lying ahead..on your shoulder. But, I know you can do it. Shall we proceed with the interview now?

SSY:
Yes, of course. Let’s begin..

Interviewer:
Alright..SSY, I want you to think to of something related to your studies in which you did really well recently. It might me you got a better grade than expected for a test or assignment, or that you were praised by a teacher. And how did you feel about what happened?

SSY:
Okay, it was my latest assignment which is ESOL 201A. I managed to score 14/15. It was unexpected result since I have not been practising writing an academic essay after such a great time. I felt so great and ..it was not easy for me to describe in words how greatful I am about it.

Interviewer:
14/15, oh my..that was one point close to full marks. Congratulations,my friend! What a great surprise..though you haven’t being practicing for such a long time but you managed to get such great score! May I know what leads you to did so well?

SSY:
Personally, I think the BEST explanation for my success in this testis my own will. My inner strength..my thirst of gaining success..my self realization..that as the eldest child I must portray a good example to my siblings..and I don’t want to disappoint my parents, instead I want to make them proud of me as their first daughter.Plus..my inner voice..sort of internal motivation..that drives me on..to attribute my success in any field I venture in. Basically,everything is due to my own’s effort..yeah emm..i am really sure with it.

Interviewer:
Wow! Great effort and strong will power! That’s good.

SSY:
Thanks. Oh, yah..by the way I did create my own words of motivation..voices from my heart that function like a pillar to every single things I do.

Interviewer:
That’s interesting..voices from your heart..inner drives..translated into words.. do you interpret it in a form of song, stories, or poems?

SSY:
Sort of a poem..kind of..would you like to know it? Shall I ?

Interviewer:
Of course I am. I would love to..tell me more about it..

SSY:
Well, it goes like this..sincerely expressed from my heart..my own words motivation.. whispers of success that I always coin to myself, SSY..“Reach high; For stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep; For every dream preceedes the goal. SSY..some people are paralyzed by their own thoughts. They accept limitations by saying ;“This is all I can do”. SSY, search yourself for hidden dreams; And set your goals on stars up high;For you, SSY are greater than what you think YOU ARE!

Interviewer:
MasyaAllah (Oh My God! So GREAT!). That was fantabulous! I am really proud of you. Keep it up! SSY, are there any other reasons that you might have done so well?

SSY:
Well…thus far..the first thing on my mind is I want to do the best ..I want to be…if possible to…be outstanding in class, and i can’t deny tha teachers/lecturers do play important roles in leading me to this success..erm..because my ESOL lectures…they are so motherly, they are like mothers to us..they are also experts in their field of teaching..expertises who really knows on how to deal with students insuch effective and creative ways. They manage to make the whole class to pay full focus to their teaching throughout the whole session and the best of all she always praises me whenever I got correct answer in class.

Interviewer:
Do you mean teachers’s feedback? And how does this affect your future studies?

SSY:
Yes, correct. Their sincere feedbacks towards every single of my correct response in class. Those praises really embark my spirit like a sort of motivation…from the day onwards I want …my hunger of praises gradually increase.. but of course not the unsincere ones, but the sincere ones. Therefore I have to struggle very hard to get sincere praises from teacher. But…no matter whatever form they are..i strongly believe that everything will finally relies back on me, I’m.. as the person herself..even with tons/ mountains of praises befallen me..but if it does not comes together with self actualization.. realization…that success..REMINDING.. what i do today is important because I am paying a day of my life for it... What I accomplish must be worthwhile because the price is high....cause.. MY family wants ME to do well in everything (e.g. good grades and good health)....and... MY family don’t want ME to rush through and simply pass and know nothing. ...hhh....In the hope that I will have a good qualification so that I can have a bright future. MY STRONG WILL POWER TO SUCCESS!

Interviewer:
Congratulations..you seem to have..full confidence in yourself. Okey, next.. I want you to think of something related to your study in which you did not do so well recently. It might be that you got a worse grade than expected for an assignment or test, or you were criticized by a teacher for example. And just like the prior question..may I know why do you think you didn’t do so well? And how did you feel about what happened?

SSY:
Emmm…may I take the most significant example from my schooling experience instead of here?

Interviewer:
Yes, of course as long as you feel comfortable with it.

SSY:
Thank you. Well..it was regarding my add maths subject (additional mathematics). I scored a ‘C’ in my final year examination. And it did really made me felt bad and totally frustrated with myself. It was quite unpredictable..because as far as I could remember..i managed to answer all of the required questions..perhaps I might lose marks on my calculations’s steps..furthermore..getting correct steps in calculating..cost more marks..for each correct steps.. ..than getting a single correct answer (2marks) in add math. One may get between 1 to 2 marks for each steps..thus if there’s 4 steps towards getting the right answer..one can easily obtain 8 points. And for this coincidence..i didn’t think that it is due to lack of struggle..i did put endless effort on it..i bought lots of reference and exercise books plus attending tuition class for it once a week…hmm..may be I am weak at analyzing numerical questions..truely since I was in school..at one state…I finally realize that I’m a linguist not a mathematicians..i perfom really well in fields associated with language compare to numericals/maths..

Interviewer:
SSY, did you find add maths difficult? Or is there any other reasons or factors that might cause you to did not perform so well in it?

SSY:
No. I can’t say that add maths is a difficult subject because if others can get good scores for the subject..indicating that it is not a difficult subject at all..i should be able to do it too. But, in my opinion, the most important thing of all is on how people regard or perceive it..their mind setting towards the subject. Perhaps, as a result of setting my mind that I am a linguist not a mathematicians .... slowly affect my achievement in this subject.Yeah…. everything falls back on me..i don’t think there’s any other factor contributing to it…my internal motivation.

Interviewer:
How might this affect your future studies?

SSY:
Emmm…I will keep saying that I am a linguist. I don’t want to think of mathematics anymore. How did it affect me? Well…it’s the end of everything. It was the final exam. And after all..after schooling.. I choose to pursue my studies in Bachelor of Education – Teaching English to Speakers Other Languages (B.ed TESOL). A course..which I could say almost 90% does not involve mathematics at all but LANGUAGE.But bear in mind that this does not mean I HATE ADD MATHs..i won’t..every singlE created things/field of knowledge has it own significants or use in any man’s life..it was just that for this moment..i am more toward linguistic fields..who knows in years to come my interest might goes to Mathematics.Wallahu’alam (Only God knows everything).
